at wit’s end

It’s nice to meet up with old friends who wander away. They usually surprise. The face is the same, but I don’t remember the voice. It doesn’t sound like her, it’s changed- more cultured, more accented, more distant even.
I guess people don’t grow equally or in the same direction- even really good friends.
Grown ups, pah!

Sitting across each other at the dining table, i explained to my mother how my friend lost her boy pal to his old girlfriend who claimed to be on the verge on an emotional breakdown. My friend thought it was preposterous and so did i.
She’ll be better off without him, said mama, about my friend, and lapsed into rhyme— “He wants to be an Oak Tree, she (old girlfriend) wants to be a clingling vine and it’s fine.”
We both burst out laughing.
